Let's Talk!
I do my best as a teacher. I really do. But each time I’m nearing the end of the semester or gearing up for a new semester, there are a few things that stand out as “I wish I could do more of this.” More opportunities to get to know my students, more private interactions with them, more small writing activities, and more chances to let students use English in a natural and practical setting. But hey, we can’t all be Superteachers all the time, right?
Let’s Talk forms can help though.
The idea is simple. Have a space for the student to write 3-5 sentences to you. You can assign a topic, either related or unrelated to class, or have students write about anything they like. You could have students expound upon an idea from class, share their opinion on a question or issue, answer a question like, “What’s your favorite movie?” Always leave it open, too, so students could write about anything that’s bothering them. Maybe they’re fighting with their roommate or they’re confused about what to do after graduation, and they just need someone to know.
But English is all about communication! Beneath the space where your student wrote, have a box/area for you to respond. This creates a safe space for students to practice English without their classmates observing and can help you get to know your students better.
Now, of course, this does take a bit of time to respond to each student after class. If your schedule doesn’t give you the time you need, you could only have students write in their Let’s Talk forms on certain weeks, or you could alternate the students who will write. If you have the time, this is a great way to connect with your students in a completely new way!
