Quarterly Review: Get Your Students Back on Track!

Your students started out the semester on fire! They were ready for a new semester and prepared to work hard. After you helped them set their semester goals, they were inspired and motivated. Well, in a perfect world anyway. Maybe your students weren’t that starry-eyed, but there’s something special about the beginning of the semester. That excitement and energy can fade pretty quickly, and students may forget their goals even faster. It’s time to remind them with Quarterly Reviews.

 

I use Quarterly Reviews to help students re-focus on their goals, as well as practice self-assessment. Being self-aware and learning how to gauge your own progress is not just useful in the classroom, but can also be a valuable skill to have after graduation.

Here’s what I ask students to evaluate:

  • What are your top 3 goals?

  • What is your top 1 goal?

  • What did you do well in the last quarter?

  • What do you want to improve in the next quarter?

  • In the next quarter, I will do: 

  • I will stop doing:

  • I will continue doing:

  • I will start doing:

I also ask students to rate their vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and confidence/smoothness in speaking from a scale of 1-5. 

 

I love that the questions focus on what students have been doing well and can continue doing, as well as focus on what’s holding them back, and what can help propel them further.

You allow students to keep their answers private, or ask them to show you their work as a homework assignment. It can be a great insight to know how your students are rating themselves. If a students rated himself with 5 stars for all categories, maybe he needs to be challenged a little more, and if a student rated himself with just 1 star for all categories, he definitely needs a little more attention and encouragement.
