New Year's ESL Lesson Idea

If you’re scrambling for lesson ideas at the end of the year or at the beginning of the year, having a “New Year’s” themed lesson can be a life saver! At the end of the semester, students are tired and unfocused, and at the beginning of the year, if you’re coming back from winter break, students could also be unmotivated and unfocused.

I also like to have an easier lesson at the beginning of the semester, just in case students are missing books or there are admin things that need to be discussed or introduced.

So if you want to do a New Year’s themed ESL lesson, here are a few discussion questions you could use in your class!

  • How would you describe 2022 in one word?

  • Did you have a new year’s resolution for 2022? Did you reach your goal?

  • What’s something you learned this year?

  • What was the best day of 2022 for you?

  • What is a habit you want to have in 2023?

  • What is a goal you want to reach in 20223?

  • What is something you regret doing or not doing in 2022?

You can also show students a life wheel and ask them to rate the areas in their life from one to ten. A life wheel will have a collection of parts of life like career/study, finances, relationships, etc. Students can discuss and rank how well they think they are doing in each aspect.

Hopefully this will help you if you need an extra boost of inspiration at the end of the year or the beginning of the year!
