Thanksgiving PPT Outline

If you’re American, then November is Thanksgiving month! If you’re planning on introducing Thanksgiving to your students, here’s a helpful list of things I usually touch on when I introduce this holiday.

History

If you have enough time, you can dive into the history. Groups of Englishmen came to America for adventure, riches, or religious freedom! A storm blew the Mayflower off course and they ended up landing a little farther North than they expected. The winter was hard, without food or proper shelter. Add in diseases, and most of the people died. When the weather got warmer, friendly Native Americans helped the colonists recover. For their first harvest, they celebrated together with a giant meal.

Turkey

Of course we can’t forget the star of the show! I usually introduce just how big a turkey is. Did you know they can weigh up to 13 kg and be 122 cm tall? I introduce the fact that many people eat turkey throughout the year, but this is the only time we buy a whole bird. It’s a lot of work for to cook one too, since it can take several hours and usually means a pretty early morning for most moms!

Food!

I show pictures of everything from cranberry sauce to stuffing to green bean casserole to sweet potato casserole to mashed potatoes. (I usually find my students get most excited about mashed potatoes, since they know what those are.)

  • Mashed Potatoes

  • Green bean casserole

  • Sweet Potato Casserole

  • Pumpkin Pie

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Each year, we have the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York! It’s several hours long, so we just keep it playing on the TV as we talk and cook and enjoy our time together

Football

Maybe we’ll watch a football game on TV or maybe we’ll go outside as a family to play together.

Black Friday Preparation!

Black Friday is the biggest shopping day of the year! Families will plan out what they want to buy and start shopping. Some people will even sleep outside the store! Other people will wake up super early to be the first people in the stores.
