10 More Debate Topics for ESL Students

Whether you’ve been asked to teach a debate class or are just looking for conversation starter to use in class, I always like to have a running list of really great debate topics. These also work great for writing prompts or impromptu speech topics for more advanced students!

  1.  Family must always come first.

  2. Never borrow money from friends.

  3. It should be illegal to have more than two children.

  4. People should be allowed to dress casually in the workplace.

  5. There should be stricter punishments for driving drunk.

  6. Children shouldn’t watch TV.

  7. Mental health should be taught as course in school.

  8. Romantic movies set unrealistic standards and should be regulated.

  9. We should have three-day weekends instead of a two-day weekends.

  10. Money can’t buy happiness.

Something I really focus on in all of my classes is the ability to think critically. I often have found that students spend the majority of their time memorizing facts, hearing teachers’ opinions, and just getting non-stop input. In my classes, I want to stop for a minute and challenge them to think for themselves. What do they really think about a topic? Can they hear an opposing idea and counter it? Can they hear an opposing idea and see the truth in it and accept it?
